An automatic pool cover is a motorized or hydraulic safety cover that travels on side tracks and stores in a housing at one end of the pool. When the cover is fully closed and specified for that opening, some products are designed to meet ASTM F1346 performance criteria for safety covers. Whether that satisfies a local barrier law depends on the jurisdiction, not the product category. The main variables are drive type (hydraulic versus electric), track location (undertrack versus top-track), new-build versus retrofit, and whether the pool can take a rectangular travel path. A spa in the same water plane may share that path; a raised or offset spa usually needs its own lid. Hotel and rooftop decks add wind, hours, and a staff procedure a backyard specification does not. This guide explains those variables for residential, spa, and commercial projects. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer manual or a decision by the local building official.

What types of automatic pool covers are used today?

Most automatic systems are either hydraulic or electric. Hydraulic units push and pull with fluid power and are common on larger or irregular travel paths. Electric units use a motor at the housing and are common on rectangular residential pools with a straightforward run.

Track location changes the deck. Undertrack and recessed systems hide hardware in or under the coping. Top-track systems sit on the finished deck and are often the retrofit path when the slab cannot be recut.

When is a new-build specification different from a retrofit?

On a new build, the cover box, conduit, key-switch location, and track can be coordinated with the shell, deck, and electrical drawings before concrete is placed. That is the cheaper and cleaner path.

A retrofit has to work with an existing deck thickness, bond beam, and power route. Recessed track may require saw-cutting. Some freeform and infinity edges cannot take a standard automatic travel path without a custom fabric and track plan, and some cannot take one at all.

How do automatic covers apply to spas and commercial pools?

A spa attached to a pool may share a cover, need its own automatic spa cover, or sit outside the travel path. Spillover spas and raised spas change the geometry and the housing location.

Hotel and resort pools add operating hours, bather load, and staff procedure. A cover that works in a backyard can fail as an operations plan if nobody is trained to open, close, and inspect it on a schedule.

What must be on the cover specification before anyone bids?

Write the opening first: length, width, and any radius, step, or vanishing-edge break that interrupts a straight travel path. Then write new-build or retrofit, deck thickness, bond-beam condition, and whether the slab can be recut. Housing type, key-switch location, power or hydraulic routing, and who inspects the finished system belong in the same brief. A bid that prices fabric without those fields is not a comparable bid.

Call out wind exposure, operating hours, and whether staff or a household will close the cover. Commercial decks need a named closer and a log. Residential decks still need an adult who can see the water when the key is turned. If an attached spa sits in the path, say whether the cover is shared or the spa has its own lid. If you skip that sentence, the fabric will be cut for a rectangle that does not exist.

Leave brand preference off the first page of the brief. Drive type and track location are design decisions. Brand is a later procurement decision once the opening and the structure are real. This journal will not rank manufacturers. It will tell you which fields make two quotes describe the same job.

When is hydraulic the better drive, and when is electric enough?

Electric drives suit a rectangular residential opening with a clean run, a housing that can take the motor, and a household that will close the cover after use. They fail first on long or irregular travel, heavy fabric, or a retrofit where the power route is already a compromise. Hydraulic drives push and pull with fluid power. They are common on larger openings, commercial hours, and paths that are not a simple rectangle. They add hose routing, a power unit, and a service story that a backyard electrician may not own.

Do not pick a drive from a brochure photo. Write the opening, the wind, the hours, and who services the system. Then ask which drive can finish a close under those conditions without forcing the fabric. A later comparison guide will put the two drives in one matrix. Until that page exists, treat drive type as a duty decision, not a brand decision.

Rooftop and hotel decks often look like “just a bigger backyard.” Wind and a night closer usually push the brief toward a specified commercial duty, which may be hydraulic. A quiet rectangular house pool with a short run usually does not need that duty. If the quote cannot say why the drive was chosen, it is not finished.

Which pools should not get an automatic cover?

Vanishing edges, tight radii, steps that cut the track, and freeform plans without a rectangular travel path are the usual stops. Some of those pools can take a custom fabric and track. Some cannot. Measure first. A kit sized for a rectangle will not become a safety cover because someone wants the category.

A raised or offset spa that sits outside the path still needs its own lid. Ignoring the spa does not make the pool cover safer. It leaves an open vessel next to a closed one. Write the spa decision on the same sheet as the pool opening.

If the only honest answer is a seasonal mesh or solid safety cover plus a fence, say so. Automatic convenience is not a requirement.
